Keep it Fresh: How to Clean and Maintain Your Fight Gear
Share
Your fight gear takes a beating during training. Sweat, bacteria, and general wear and tear can shorten its lifespan and lead to unpleasant odors if not cared for properly. Proper cleaning and maintenance are essential not only for hygiene but also for preserving the quality and longevity of your equipment.
GLOVES (BOXING, MUAY THAI, MMA):
- WIPE DOWN AFTER USE:
Use an anti-bacterial wipe or a cloth slightly dampened with a mild disinfectant solution (or specialized gear spray) to wipe the inside and outside.
- AIR OUT COMPLETELY:
Never leave gloves in your gym bag! Open them up fully and let them air dry in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight (which can damage leather).
- USE DEODORIZERS:
Glove dogs, charcoal bags, or even stuffing them loosely with newspaper can help absorb moisture and odor.
- DEEP CLEAN (OCCASIONALLY):
For a deeper clean, use a leather cleaner/conditioner for leather gloves or a gentle soap solution for synthetics, ensuring they dry thoroughly afterward.
HAND WRAPS:
- WASH REGULARLY:
Hand wraps absorb a lot of sweat and should be washed after every 1-2 uses.
- USE A WASH BAG:
Place wraps in a mesh laundry bag (like the free one included with THS wraps!) to prevent tangling in the washing machine.
- AIR DRY:
Hang wraps to air dry completely. Avoid using a machine dryer, as high heat can damage the elasticity.
PADS & MITTS:
- WIPE DOWN:
Similar to gloves, wipe down pads and mitts with disinfectant wipes or spray after each session.
- AIR DRY:
Ensure they are stored in a dry, ventilated area.
APPAREL (T-SHIRTS, SHORTS):
- WASH PROMPTLY:
Don't let sweaty clothes sit. Wash them as soon as possible according to the care label instructions.
- USE SPORTS DETERGENT:
Consider detergents specifically designed for athletic wear to combat odors and bacteria effectively.
Taking care of your gear is an investment in your training and health. Clean gear performs better, lasts longer, and keeps you and your training partners safer.
